A Brief History of the Karmann Ghia
The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 debuted in Europe in 1955 and reached the U.S. in 1956. The coupe was joined by a convertible in 1958. Designed by Italy’s renowned Ghia Studios and built by German coachbuilder Karmann, the Ghia was a stylish alternative to the VW Beetle. It shared the Beetle’s proven air-cooled, rear-mounted engine and simple chassis, but offered elegant, curvy bodywork that drew inspiration from European sports cars of the era.
Over its production run, more than 450,000 Karmann Ghias were built, with fewer than 80,000 convertibles — making both body styles increasingly collectible today. Subtle styling changes were introduced over time, mostly to meet evolving safety regulations, but the core design remained remarkably consistent. The Ghia was never positioned as a true sports car — instead, it offered a unique blend of practicality, style, and charm.
